Matawa First Nation Educational Authority, LDSB partner on education for First Nations

The Matawa First Nation Education Authority and Lakehead District School Board have signed a memorandum of understanding focused on educational opportunities for First Nations students. Nation Talk reports that the MOU outlines several areas of shared commitment, including culturally supportive education, cultural integration and empowerment, and a commitment to reconciliation. To promote cultural integration and empowerment, the partners plan to co-develop curriculum modules that include First Nation culture, history, language, and perspectives, while engaging First Nation parents, staff, and Elders in the schools. The two parties have formed a joint steering committee that will meet three times each year to review progress on key points, resolve any challenges, and strategize around future actions. “We are forging a powerful partnership rooted in mutual respect and shared vision,” said MFNEA representative Nancy Wasna. “This collaboration strengthens our ability to provide culturally responsive education and holistic support, ensuring our students thrive academically, socially, and spiritually while staying connected to their First Nations culture.”
