As the postsecondary school year comes to an end, several postsecondary institutions have taken the opportunity to host powwows for their students and graduates. Postsecondary institutions such as Manitoba Institute of Trades & Technology, Red River College Polytechnic, St Clair College, the University of Manitoba, the University of Windsor, and the University of Winnipeg hosted or co-hosted powwows with food and dancing to celebrate their students and graduates. UManitoba celebrated the accomplishments of over 100 graduating students at its traditional powwow ceremony on Saturday and gave them sashes to mark their accomplishments. At UWinnipeg, students were given blankets in recognition of their work. “When we do this for our young people, we don’t only honour them personally, but we honour the nations that they come from … that’s an important part of reconciliation,” said Elder Dan Thomas, who opened the UWinnipeg graduation powwow with a prayer.
