Canada prepublishes proposed expansion to student loan forgiveness

The Government of Canada has pre-published its proposed changes to the national financial assistance and student loans regulations. Specifically, these changes would expand loan forgiveness eligibility to professionals working in remote and rural communities in one of 10 occupations, including early childhood educators, dentists, and personal support workers. This would increase the number of beneficiaries by about 8,000 professionals starting in 2025-26. “Providing student loan relief to health care and social service professionals working in rural and remote communities will not only help improve access to healthcare in these communities – it will also improve overall health outcomes and add talented workers to our community healthcare networks,” said Canada Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour Steven MacKinnon.
