In a recent article for Inside Higher Ed, Maria Carrasco discusses how mental health kits can provide students with a means to ground themselves when experiencing challenges. Carrasco describes the work of Martez Files, a professor who creates mental health kits for students filled with self-care items such as handwritten note cards; mental health resources for those who need to reach out for professional help; and items such as teas, honey, essential oils, stress balls, journals, and stuffed animals. Some students have helped create the mental health kits, and say that the experience is soothing. Carrasco says that this helps students to help others, which can further help struggling students through raising awareness and encouraging students to care for each other.
