“Keep the parties civil:” Institutions call for students to take “subdued” approach to St Patrick’s Day

Several institutions have called on their student populations to take a more subdued and subtle approach to St Patrick’s Day this year. Wilfrid Laurier University, the University of Waterloo, McMaster University, Niagara College, and Brock University are among the institutions that issued statements encouraging their students to be respectful of their neighbours by keeping parties indoors or going to pubs or popular commercial venues to celebrate. Brock ran a “Don’t Put the Bad in Badger” campaign to remind students that they represent the university to the community. In British Columbia, Kristina Laitinen of the Okanagan College Students’ Union noted that there is “a lot of fatigue in general” with the pandemic, but that students are “fairly co-operative” with protocols at in-person events.
