Russia seeks academic ties with India as Western sanctions continue

As Western sanctions continue due to the war in Ukraine, Russia is seeking academic ties with India to fill the gap, writes Pola Lem. Lem says that Western institutions’ isolation of Russia has driven the country to show more interest in alliances in Asia. The author says that academics are sceptical that the move could boost the sector or that it could fix the frustrations faced by elite scholars in Russia. “Russia has no choice but to try to pivot in terms of research development,” said McGill University associate professor of political science Maria Popova. “This is easier said than done…especially because opposition to Putin’s regime is proportionally higher among high-tech sector workers and many have emigrated or may plan to emigrate.” Times Higher Ed Note: Archived stories may contain dead links or be missing source links.
