Simon Fraser University Director of Athletics and Recreation Theresa Hanson has departed the university, a move that the says comes four months after controversy erupted over the elimination of SFU’s varsity football program. “After careful consideration and discussion, [Hanson and] SFU have come to mutual agreement that the time is right for a change in direction within Athletics and Recreation,” said SFU Vice-Provost Students and International Rummana Khan Hemani. “Further detail on next steps and the interim leader for Athletics and Recreation will be shared as soon as possible.” reports that Hanson presided over the decision to cancel SFU’s football program. A report is expected this September for the ongoing assessment of the future of SFU football. An investigation into allegations of bullying and harassment within the women’s soccer program is also reportedly underway.
