Statistics Canada has released a new study on the number of postsecondary enrolments and graduations in Canada in the 2020/2021 academic year. StatCan found that public college and university enrolments dropped by 0.6% from 2019/2020 to 2020/2021. This was largely the result of declining college enrolments among both domestic and international students. Shorter college programs requiring a work-integrated learning component were affected to a greater degree by COVID-19 and saw larger declines. University enrolments increased by 2% overall, with international and domestic enrolments both increasing over the previous year’s numbers. The domestic increase was thanks in part to an increase in young, Canadian-born women’s participation in postsecondary education.
