Strategies that researchers with disabilities can use to find a welcoming, safe workplace: Opinion

Opinion

In a podcast for Nature hosted by Adam Levy, four researchers with disabilities discuss the strategies they have used and the challenges they have faced when searching for a workplace where they can thrive. The researchers discussed the factors they weighed when choosing their workplace, which included accessibility, the institution’s ability to provide specific supports, and the employer’s response when asking for accommodations. They also discussed red flags and challenges such as being unable to speak with a disability coordinator, experiencing othering, and feeling unable to disclose a disability within a power dynamic. Researcher Kelsey Byers recommended looking for others in the lab who have a disability, looking for EDI statements that go beyond the minimum, and looking for job postings that include a commitment to diversity.
