The University of British Columbia Okanagan has partnered with Fenix Advanced Materials to advance battery research. UBCO Principal Research Chair in Energy Storage Technologies Dr Jian Liu will conduct research to support the development of a solid-state lithium battery that is smaller, stronger, safer, and less expensive. UBCO will establish the “first university-based battery prototyping facility in western Canada,” called the Pouch Cell Facility, using $1M in funds from Fenix. “For a long time, solid-state batteries were considered more demanding to produce, but research in this area is establishing new methods that are bringing these batteries closer to the market,” said Liu.
