The Ottawa Heart Institute at the University of Ottawa has partnered with Eastern Health to help address Newfoundland and Labrador’s backlog of heart surgeries. Under the agreement, surgeons from the heart institute will make monthly trips to NL and patients will be brought to Ottawa for surgery. Surgeons will also provide Eastern Health cardiac-care staff with professional and academic sessions. The five-year agreement is renewable, formalizes previous arrangements with the institute, and positions the institute as a national health-care provider. “This is going to be a big change because you’re going to have more resources [brought] here, to treat the patients here and still more resources for more complex operations to be done in Ottawa,” said Ottawa Heart Institute CEO Dr Thierry Mesana.
