York University and the Government of the Philippines have signed an agreement to enhance academic and research collaborations between YorkU and Phillipine universities. The Phillipine government will contribute 5 million pesos ($115K CDN) to YorkU to strengthen programming, projects, and activities that focus on Filipino history, culture, and society, such as the development of the library’s “Filipiniana” section. YorkU states that it is the first and only Canadian university to receive funding of this kind. “York, in fact, out of all universities in Canada, was chosen because of the strengths of our research on the Philippines and the Philippine diaspora,” said YorkU Associate Professor Ethel Tungohan.
