Aurora, UBC launch Indigenous-focused programs

Aurora College and the University of British Columbia have each launched new academic programs. Aurora hosted the WeldHER+ Workshop, a tuition-free welding program for Indigenous women, in order to provide students with access to hands-on training to build their confidence in the field. “I was shy to get into this course until I found out it was for women,” said student Dora Hansen. “I’m actually kind of proud of my work, and I’m not nervous to do it anymore.” Hansen is now planning to return to school to pursue welding. Meanwhile, UBC is planning to launch a new Bachelor of Indigenous Land Stewardship. The program was co-developed with Indigenous communities in response to community-identified needs. It blends Indigenous and ecological sciences with law, governance, and business. Students have the opportunity to learn from Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and Indigenous scholars. MasterCard Foundation has contributed $8.5M to support the program and help cover tuition, relocation, and work supports for First Nations, Métis, and Inuit students.
