FNEC, ITK, MNC congratulate Canada’s new federal government, issue calls for next four years

Following the federal election, representatives from the First Nations Education Council, Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, and Métis National Council issued statements and comments, outlining their hopes and expectations for the Government of Canada. FNEC emphasized education’s role as a pillar of self-determination and reiterated the “necessity of making major investments to bridge the gap in education and school infrastructures.” ITK President Natan Obed told the Lethbridge Herald that he hopes to see continued funding to programs such as the Inuit Child First Initiative—which supports access to health, education, and social services—and noted Prime Minister Mark Carney’s pledge to invest in Inuit Nunangat University. The MNC also referenced its election priorities, which included increasing educational opportunities for Métis looking to enter the workforce.
