AB students caught off guard as student grant funding suddenly lowered

CBC reports that the Government of Alberta has lowered monthly full-time student grant funding from a maximum of $375 to $250 without prior warning. While funding for the grant remains at $54.4M overall, changes to the income eligibility thresholds mean that students from middle-income families cannot benefit from the grants. The changes have also made costs of living even less affordable for low- and middle-income families, reports CBritish Columbia, especially amid inflation and tuition hikes. “[W]e’re not even getting any notice that these changes are being made, so students can’t plan ahead for their semester,” said UAlberta student union president Abner Monteiro.
