BCIT opens new energy centre, appoints chair in advanced building technology

The British Columbia Institute of Technology has made two important announcements recently. The institute recently opened the new Wood Waste to Energy Centre (WWEC), a $1.5M space that includes a biomass boiler that can recycle wood waste, such as cut-offs and sawdust from the Carpentry and Joinery programs, to heat the campus’ buildings. BCIT has also created a new Research Chair in Advanced Building Technology in collaboration with BC Housing. The chair will be held by Dr Fitsum Tariku, who will focus on housing education and research with an emphasis on decarbonization and technology development.
