Canada extends work permit for international students stuck in immigration limbo

The Government of Canada’s immigration department has announced that it is rolling out interim measures to allow international students stuck in immigration limbo to remain and work legally in Canada, reports The Toronto Star. Due to backlogs during the COVID-19 pandemic, the intake of some skilled immigration programs was suspended until last month, leaving many international students with expired work permits. The approximately-93,000 individuals whose work permits expired or will expire by the end of December 2022 will receive extended work permits that last through to the end of May 2023. “Today’s announcement is going to create a pathway to allow them to continue to work in Canada and remain in Canada despite this challenging circumstance that they’ve found themselves in,” stated Canada Immigration Minister Sean Fraser.
