Several institutions have recently embarked on challenges and initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) on campus. Cégep de Drummondville and Cégep de Victoriaville embarked on the Défi sans auto solo challenge to save 225 kg and 175 kg of GHGs respectively by using more sustainable transportation. Together, the two cégeps saved over 1,200 kgs of GHGs over one week, and Victoriaville directeur général Denis Deschamps expressed his hope that the challenge would lead to more sustainable habits at the college. At the University of Alberta, researchers have embarked on a project to create a living laboratory out of the 100-year-old University Commons building. The building will be outfitted with smart technology and sensors in order to determine how to optimize control systems to reduce energy use and GHGs while increasing comfort and financial savings.
