Evacuations ordered, emergency services respond to “hoax” explosive device at UTSC

Police officers, bomb experts, paramedics and firefighters were called to the University of Toronto Scarborough’s campus on Tuesday afternoon after a “hoax” explosive device was found in the Environmental Sciences and Chemistry building. This building and the Instructional Centre were both evacuated. The device was remotely examined and detonated after it was determined to resemble a real bomb. Emergency services personnel subsequently found that the device did not have explosive components. The building was swept for other devices; investigators are reviewing surveillance footage to determine who placed the device.
