Several institutions will be holding vigils, candlelight processions, panel discussions, and other initiatives to mark the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women and remember the 14 women who were killed in a mass shooting at École Polytechnique de Montréal. Memorial University will be holding its annual event, which includes a vigil, a candlelight procession, and remarks from speakers; the University of Toronto is holding a welcome lunch, a panel discussion, and a memorial; and the University of Regina is hosting an annual vigil that will include the lighting of 14 candles. University of Waterloo Engineering Dean Mary Wells has written a reflection on the massacre and the need for women engineers in a male-dominated field. “As I remember the 14 women who died 33 years ago, it is my job to ensure that all our engineering students, regardless of their identity, feel welcome, safe and supported as they fulfill their educational ambitions and reach their human potential,” writes Wells.
