Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada is making changes to open work permits for family members of temporary residents, including spouses of certain international students. Starting on January 21st, spouses of international students will be eligible for open work permits if the principal applicant is enrolled in a master’s program that is 16 months or longer, a doctoral program, or a select professional or eligible program. Spouses of students who are continuing their program for longer than expected can apply for a work permit renewal, provided certain conditions are met. These changes do not affect the partners of workers who are covered by free trade agreements.
