MB expands seats at WCVM for students to combat veterinarian shortage

The Government of Manitoba is expanding its interprovincial agreement with the University of Saskatchewan’s Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM) to increase the number of seats for students from Manitoba from 15 to 20. MB will increase the funding it provides to the WCVM by around $540K in order to support five additional seats, bringing 2023-2024 funding to around $7M. The decision was reportedly made in response to the veterinary shortage, which is having a significant impact on the agricultural and animal industries in MB. The expansion also looks to improve working conditions for veterinarians, who, due to the shortage, may work upwards of 14 hours a day.
