ON teacher graduates face long wait times for certification despite market needs

A recent article from CBC discusses the issues that recent teaching graduates face with slow processes and poor communication as they go through Ontario’s teacher certification process. While ON has a shortage of teachers, CBC says the Ontario College of Teachers certification process is getting longer, with wait times of 120 days or longer. Teaching graduates have reportedly taken casual positions with no benefits and lower pay than certified teachers as they wait for their applications to be processed, while some school boards have had to hire uncertified teachers to cover emergency vacancies. The Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation says that the delays started in 2021 with record-breaking applications, and changing government regulations made the situation worse.
