RDP course simulates zombie apocalypse to increase student engagement, learning

A Red Deer Polytechnic instructor is keeping students engaged by gamifying his English course. RDP Instructor Dr Roger Davis was inspired to turn his English 220 course into a zombie apocalypse after attending an international teaching seminar. Students in the course must create a character based on randomly generated parameters before completing a group project focused on establishing infrastructure to benefit society. Students are immersed in a simulated environment that integrates literature on a variety of topics to inform student understanding. “[Students] have the opportunity to consider ethics, politics and society as they create a community and research projects that are applied and practical,” said Davis. “These outcomes will continue to serve them well, no matter what field of study they pursue.” RDP Note: Archived stories may contain dead links or be missing source links.
