Regina police say tuition scam has affected 23 students; financial losses exceed $125K

The Regina Police Service are warning students about a scam in which students are promised reduced tuition rates in exchange for upfront payment. The scammer reportedly receives the money, then “pays” the university using fraudulent credit cards. The victim finds out that they have been scammed when they are notified that there was a problem with their tuition payment. To date, this scam has affected 23 people and incurred financial losses exceeding $125K. The police are advising university students not to provide passwords or login information to anyone and to be cautious of “recovery schemes,” in which a scammer promises to recover any lost money for a fee.
