In an article for CBritish Columbia, UBC Master of Journalism student Sarah Williscraft has highlighted the efforts of several Canadian researchers and entrepreneurs – including researchers from the University of Prince Edward Island and McGill University – who are supporting environment-focused initiatives through machine learning. At UPEI, researchers have developed a system that prepares farmers for unpredictable weather patterns by using previous years’ data to predict the diseases that may be prevalent at different times of the year. At McGill, researchers are creating a system that can predict the social impacts of extreme weather events. The project uses AI to analyze social narratives using sources such as social media and compare them with historical data to develop an understanding of how people respond to weather over time.
