Students, community members chastise, create petition in reaction to professor’s social media

Students and community members are continuing to respond to the controversial social media posts made by Université de Montréal professor Michael Jabara Carley. Two UMontréal students launched a petition against the professor demanding that the institution chastise him and remove him from the role of thesis adviser and supervisor. The petition had received over 175 signatures as of Sunday night. While UMontréal has stated that Carley has freedom of expression just as anyone else does, UMontréal student and co-launcher of the petition Katia Sviderskaya argued that Carley is spreading misinformation using his title. In a recent article for Journal de Montréal, former QC politician Mario Dumont laments that it was possible for a Putin supporter to be employed at UMontréal at a time when the institution no longer has a professor who specializes in Quebec’s history.
