The University of Toronto and partner hospitals such as Sunnybrook Research Institute, Unity Health Toronto, and the University Health Network have launched the first coordinated response from Canadian researchers on the global monkeypox outbreak. The research initiative is centered in the Emerging and Pandemic Infections Consortium (EPIC) and will use U of T’s Combined Containment Level 3 Unit to better understand factors such as disease symptoms, the genetic evolution of the virus, and transmission risks. U of T associate professor Darrel Tan emphasized that the group is participating in community meetings with local groups to better respond to the disease.
