UBC’s Joan Gillis fonds coadded to UNESCO’s Canada Memory of the World Register

The Joan Gillis fonds at the University of British Columbia’s Library have been added to UNESCO’s Canada Memory of the World Register. UNESCO’s register seeks to safeguard the documentary heritage of humanity against collective amnesia and neglect. The fonds consists of letters and photographs sent by a group of young Japanese Canadians to Joan Gillis during the internment of Japanese Canadians in Canada. The letters discuss life at work camps and farms, living conditions there, and new schools and teachers. “The letters’ capacity to help understand the lived experience of the writers, and the impact of events on their lives is immeasurable,” said UBC Library Archivist Krisztina Laszlo.
