UCN near-net-zero greenhouse is operational, plans announced to test growing in northern climate

University College of the North has announced that the near-net-zero greenhouse on The Pas campus is now operational. UCN began constructing the greenhouse in 2020 with the goal of improving food sovereignty in Northern communities. The facility incorporates multiple growth systems to test the viability of the system and explore how produce could be grown in a northern climate. The produce grown in the greenhouse will be used by UCN Culinary Arts students and staff in the campus cafeteria. “The greenhouse grows vegetables but also produces research and student education,” said UCN Assistant Professor Katrin Stedronsky. “One of the many classroom ideas is to provide a living laboratory space for botany, biology, and environmental course work.” UCN| UCN (Release) Note: Archived stories may contain dead links or be missing source links.
