UPEI AVC changes admissions policy to include character evaluations, personal essays

The University of Prince Edward Island’s Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC) has changed its admissions policy for veterinary students for the 2025-26 application cycle. The college has lowered the weight of academic achievement and added a test to evaluate character traits such as compassion, empathy, teamwork, and integrity. Students who score well on both components will be invited to complete an interview and write a personal essay. AVC Dean of Academic and Student Affairs Dr Anne Marie Carey explained that grades are only one component of selecting the students who will become successful veterinarians. “My hope is […] we’ll get to see a different range of applicants and people will have an opportunity to really shine,” said Carey.
