USask approves new Indigenous verification policy

The University of Saskatchewan’s Board of Governors has approved an Indigenous membership/citizenship verification policy called “deybwewin (Saulteaux)| taapwaywin (Michif)| tapwewin (Cree)” after calls to address issues around Indigenous self-identification. The new policy was the result of ground-breaking work by a task force led by Indigenous elders and leaders. It will include a document verification process for job applicants who are accessing advantages or positions created specifically for Indigenous peoples. USask will put a permanent Indigenous-led standing committee in place by September to develop a plan for the policy’s implementation and procedures.
