New initiatives coming out of Vancouver Community College and Algoma University are targeting the growing issue of food insecurity on campus. VCC has partnered with SPUD.ca to host a food drive this month to support VCC’s Gathering Spaces pantry, a project that provides healthy and accessible food for Indigenous students affected by food insecurity. For this year’s Giving Tuesday campaign, the VCC Foundation is also raising money to provide holiday hampers for students in need, stock food pantries in select departments, and develop food security education resources. AlgomaU and the Algoma University Students’ Union (AUSU) are collaborating to establish a new food pantry at the university’s Brampton campus and to expand the existing food pantry in Sault Ste Marie. AlgomaU has provided $50K to AUSU to advance the food pantry initiative.
