YorkU commits funds to support Indigenous research, partners to establish scholarships

York University has committed $1M over three years to support a research seed fund for Indigenous research. The York University Indigenous Research Seed Fund was created in response to the recommendations made in the Indigenous Framework for York University: A Guide to Action, and as a way to further build on YorkU’s commitments to support emerging Indigenous scholars. “While this is an important milestone for York on its journey towards reconciliation and decolonization, we still have work to do,” said Sheila Cote-Meek, YorkU VP, equity, people and culture. “In order to bring about change and create a truly inclusive environment we must foster an environment where diverse views are nurtured and supported.” YorkU also partnered with Alectra Inc to establish the Alectra Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (ED&I) Undergraduate Awards, which will provide scholarship opportunities for Black and Indigenous students accepted into select undergraduate programs at the university.
