Niagara College will be offering renewable scholarships to make education more affordable for First Nations students and former youth in care, starting in Fall 2025. Earlier this year, the Grand River Post Secondary Education Office told Niagara’s Indigenous education department that it was struggling to financially assist First Nations postsecondary students. This sparked a conversation about how Niagara could assist Indigenous people in accessing postsecondary education, which in turn led to the creation of a scholarship to address financial barriers. The Strong Students, Stronger Futures Scholarship—which is funded through the college’s Together Campaign—will cover tuition and ancillary fees, with eligibility determined by First Nations communities and Family and Children’s Services Niagara. “Developed alongside our partners from local Indigenous community organizations and Family and Children’s Services (FACS) Niagara, the scholarship underscores Niagara College’s strategic commitments to student success and equity and inclusion,” said Niagara Vice-President, Students Dr Chris McGrath.
