Members of the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees Local 052, which represents support workers at the University of Calgary, held an information rally last Thursday to protest budget cuts that they say unfairly target the lowest wage earners on campus. AUPE Local 052 President Justin Huseby stated that UCalgary cut 24 jobs earlier this month and that the affected jobs tended to be held by workers who are “women, people of colour, or new to Canada.” CTV News reports that the university disputed AUPE’s claims, stating that 16 full-time positions were removed from the budget through attrition and reassignment, but that no people were laid off. AUPE Local 052 and UCalgary bargaining committees have been in collective bargaining negotiations since February 2021.
