Preparing to promote DEI as an institutional president

Postsecondary presidents must be prepared to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in their leadership, writes Sheila Edwards Lange. Lange says that leaders are now expected to have experience in DEI-related areas, such as understanding equity in higher education, strategic communication, development and implementation of relevant policies, and accountability and metrics for progress. The author encourages presidents to develop an understanding of their campus’ position on DEI issues, and to be ready to “walk the walk of DEI, not just talk the talk.” Lange recommends that leaders create an actionable, inclusive, and responsive plan to move the institution forward with sensitivity towards the board’s understanding of DEI.
