A recent report from CACUSS and the Mental Health Commission of Canada on student mental health shows that students are facing increases in anxiety, depression, and related issues this year, states Moira MacDonald of University Affairs. The researchers found that the uncertainty of the pandemic alongside the lack of activities such as going to the gym or meeting in-person with friends as being notable causes of the increasing mental health issues. At the University of Prince Edward Island, the UPEI student union also conducted a survey where almost 50% of respondents said that their mental health had deteriorated this year. The survey points to further problems such as rental housing shortages impacting student mental health, and student union leaders shared these findings with PEI’s legislative assembly.
