ULaval faculty union files grievance after suspension of prof for vaccine comments

The faculty union at Université Laval has filed a grievance after ULaval Professor Patrick Provost was suspended over comments made at a conference last December. Provost, who has been suspended without pay for eight weeks, made comments about potential COVID-19 vaccination risks for children at a conference, before sending an email to all ULaval professors email referencing his presentation and asking them to share their own knowledge. Faculty union VP Simon Viviers has called the suspension “an attack on academic freedom.” The grievance comes after the Government of Quebec’s recent implementation of academic freedom legislation. QC Minister of Higher Education Danielle McCann noted that situations such as these prove that legislation on the topic is necessary.
