UTM acquires large video game collection

The University of Toronto Mississauga has acquired the Syd Bolton collection, which includes more than 14,000 video games, 5,000 video game magazines, and dozens of consoles and systems from the last 50 years. The acquisition will provide public access to the rare collection and provide resources for professors teaching about video games and their history. The collection is currently being processed and catalogued in a process that involves careful cleaning, packaging, and light repairs. Though most of the collection is stored offsite, the UTM Library currently allows students, staff, and public to make appointments to request to play games from the collection. “It’s really important to look at the history of something that has such a pervasive impact on everyday life,” said UTM head of Collections and Digital Scholarship, Chris Young.
