A new Concordia University-led research program is applying Indigenous knowledge systems to reconceptualize AI. Abundant Intelligences is an international, interdisciplinary research agenda that asserts that AI’s current trajectory is inherently biased against non-Western modes of thinking. The program explores how different conceptions of intelligence could be embodied in AI so that the technology is better oriented toward promoting human thriving, preserving and supporting Indigenous languages, and addressing environmental issues, among other efforts. Concordia is directing the program, with local work conducted by Indigenous-led research clusters based out of the University of Lethbridge, Western University, Bard College (US), Massey University (New Zealand), and the University of Hawai’i—West Oahu.
