McGill professor removed from committee following comments

McGill University Associate Professor William Clare Roberts has been removed from the university’s Committee on Student Discipline following comments about Hamas and Hezbollah, according to CTV News. Montréal Gazette reports that the university senate believed that these comments could be viewed as compromising his ability to be impartial and could undermine public confidence in the committee. McGill said that it supports academic freedom for faculty but that faculty members “have responsibilities under University policies, the positions they hold at McGill, and, more broadly, the law.” Roberts is reportedly exploring an academic freedom complaint with the university.
