Nadia Delanoy (University of Calgary) and Guy Levesque (UCalgary) discuss the findings of a scan of publicly visible AI activity from 15 research-intensive Canadian universities. Delanoy and Levesque identified nearly 1,000 AI initiatives across a variety of fronts, including AI literacy, entrepreneurship, and student engagement. The authors touch on the implications of these initiatives and discuss topics such as the difference between AI literacy and credentials, AI governance and institutional size, and institutional innovation. They conclude by summarizing key AI-related questions institutional leadership should consider as they determine their institution’s path toward AI adoption and use.
