The water tower at Dalhousie University’s Agricultural Campus will soon be removed after serving as a campus landmark for nearly 70 years. The tower was originally constructed in 1955 at what was then the Nova Scotia Agricultural College, and had been decommissioned in 2017 after the campus transitioned to the municipal water system. “Buildings and structures change over time, but the stories attached to them remain part of the fabric of the campus,” concluded Dal Faculty of Agriculture Dean Heather Bruce. “For those who spent time at NSAC and the Agricultural Campus, the water tower will likely always have a place in their memories of campus.” The tower will be removed by the end of October.

Protestors gathered at the University of Calgary following an event last week that questioned the use of the term “genocide” in connection with residential schools. Protesters called for the university to remove UCalgary Professor Emeritus Tom Flanagan’s emeritus status and ban him from campus for the comments, while Flanagan contended that the talk was a part of “legitimate academic debate” on the subject. In response to the protest, UCalgary said that it does not take a position on the issues, saying that serving as a site for lawful expression is “the role of a public university.” It added that it is examining its policies to continue to preserve the safety and well-being of the campus community.
