Major sporting events an opportunity for nursing students: Opinion

Opinion

In light of Canada’s involvement in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Toronto Metropolitan University School of Nursing Assistant Professor Areej Al-Hamad has authored an article explaining the opportunities that major sporting events could offer nursing students. Al-Hamad explains that nursing students can develop their skills and career knowledge at large events by volunteering in areas like first aid, health communication, and emergency response support. Student volunteers can also help to ease the strain that major events put on public health systems. She concludes that to properly offer such opportunities, nursing schools and organizers should develop learning modules for volunteers, offer flexible scheduling, and work to ensure equitable access.
