In a recent piece for Times Higher Ed, Matthew Brophy discusses the concept of the “influencer major” and why these programs should be taken seriously. Brophy explains that while a US university’s recent content creation degree was ridiculed, this kind of education prepares people to work in the AI era rather than in traditionally “safe” careers that are being heavily impacted by AI. In contrast, the content creation degree is teaching students to effectively be able to operate a one-person media company, preparing them for a variety of roles. Brophy concludes by arguing that human attention and trust are worth teaching in a world where traditional majors are no longer “safe.”
