AB judge says ULethbridge wrong to cancel Widdowson’s 2023 lecture

The Court of King’s Bench of Alberta recently ruled that the University of Lethbridge erred when it canceled a lecture by Frances Widdowson in 2023. CBC reports that Justice Chris Simard deemed the university’s decision to be “fundamentally and fatally flawed,” as it “failed to appreciate and expressly consider [ULethbridge student Jonah] Pickle’s and Dr Widdowson’s rights under section 2(b)” of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. In his concluding notes, Simard asserted that it would be inappropriate to force the university to either reconsider running the event or force it to allow the event to proceed. ULethbridge is in the process of reviewing the ruling.
