The Legislative Assembly of Alberta tabled legislation last week that would prohibit public organizations—including postsecondary institutions—from using diversity, equity, and inclusion policies to make hiring decisions. Bill 33 , the Justice Statutes Amendment Act would amend the Alberta Human Rights Act so that employers cannot consider characteristics such as gender identity, race, religion, or disability in hiring or promotion decisions. It would also reportedly prohibit mandatory DEI training for staff except where necessary for the job and would limit the behaviour that regulatory bodies can police members on. “The need for consistent hiring practices across all of our public institutions is absolutely essential,” said AB Justice Minister Mickey Amery.
