Canada welcomed a record-breaking 450,000 new international students in 2021, reports Kareem El-Assal of CIC News. El-Assal says that the international student population bounced back quickly after dipping at the start of the pandemic and surged to more than double the number of international students seen in 2015. India remained the leading source country for international students, followed by China, France, Iran, and Vietnam. CIC News notes that the recovery of the international student population can be partly attributed to the changes to the rules around the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). The rules were temporarily eased in October 2020 to ensure distance learning was counted towards PGWP eligibility, which enabled students to get started on their Canadian postsecondary education while travel restrictions and postsecondary institution delivery plans were in flux.
