CBC explores challenges in handling students with criminal records

News

CBC investigative journalist Leah Hendry recently explored the challenges around handling situations where a student has a criminal record, based on the recent situation at McGill University. After providing a summary of the McGill story, Hendry points to some of the programs in Canada and the US that are focused on either bringing education to incarcerated individuals or helping students with a criminal record to acclimate to campus life. “It’s not about if — it’s when — this comes to light,” commented Toronto Metropolitan University Associate Professor Rai Reece. “How will we, as an institution of higher learning, respond in a way that allows people, students, women to feel like we are holding space for someone to have a second chance and we’re holding space for survivors?”
